AMSDEN, Monroe. (Belvidere, IL, Apr. 12, 1849--Oct. 2, 1921). The son of Mr. and Mrs. Noah C. AMSDEN, Monroe moved with his parents to Dubuque in 1856. He completed his education in the public schools and went to work seven years for Joseph Waggoner, a deal in books, music, and wall paper.
In 1870 Armsden entered business for himself in general merchandise in Le Mars, Iowa. This lasted four years, before he sold the business. He returned to Dubuque and went into business with William P. LARGE. He worked four years, Armsden was a traveling salesman and then in 1879 he became a full partner in the firm of LARGE AND AMSDEN. The company had business in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and North and South Dakota. In addition to his business, he was a director of the FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE.
