At the age of fourteen, he enlisted in the [[CIVIL WAR]] and was honored for his bravery in Co. A 178th NY Volunteers as a drummer boy. In such a position, his drum beats signaled the troops.  


He resided here nine years working as the superintendent of the [[BRADLEY BROTHERS]] cigar factory before his death.
