Gilbertson, a graduate of Juilliard, a faculty member of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, composer in residence for the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and Pulitzer Prize finalist, founded the event as a way of "giving back" to Dubuque and the NORTHEAST IOWA SCHOOL OF MUSIC in which he was once a student.
