One of Dubuque's richest [[ZINC]] producers, the Avenue Top Company was incorporated with $25,000 on January 19, 1906. Frank Coates, Sr. was the president.  
 
Ore from the [[AVENUE TOP MINE]] was processed through a company operated concentrator near the downtown railroad yard and was smelted at Simpson's Furnace. When the mine closed due to financial problems, the mill was sold to the operators of the [[GOOSE HORN MINE]].
 
The site of the Avenue Top Mine was located where an Ace Hardware store was constructed much later around 2000. Dubuquer residents living in the area remember it took days and truck filled with rock and other materials to fill the mine shaft before the site could be covered with dirt. (1)

Avenue Top Mining Company

AVENUE TOP MINING COMPANY. The Avenue Top Mine produced LEAD ore up to 1880 and ZINC through 1907. One of Dubuque's richest ZINC producers, the Avenue Top Company was incorporated with $25,000 on January 19, 1906. Frank Coates, Sr. was the president.

Ore from the AVENUE TOP MINE was processed through a company operated concentrator near the downtown railroad yard and was smelted at Simpson's Furnace. When the mine closed due to financial problems, the mill was sold to the operators of the GOOSE HORN MINE.
