SPENSLEY,  Alan. (Dubuque, IA, May 14, 1928-- ). A graduate of [[DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL]], Spensley enlisted in the Navy and then returned to Dubuque to graduate from the [[UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE]]. He worked in sales for the [[DUBUQUE PACKING COMPANY]] and received several sales awards.

The son of George and Vera (Butler) Spensley, Alan was a US Navy Veteran serving during the [[KOREAN CONFLICT]] from 1950 to 1954. He graduated from the [[UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE]] in 1955 with a major in Business and a minor in Psychology. (1) 


Active in the community, Spensley has been board president of the Dubuque Community YMCA, [[DUBUQUE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY]], and the [[DUBUQUE ARBORETUM AND BOTANICAL GARDENS]]. He has served as chairman of the Dubuque Citizen Advisory Committee, served on the Ennoble Resident Advisory Committee, and been a Stephen Minister for [[FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST]]. He was a former president of the International Friendship Force of Dubuque and hosted people from Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa. He received the Alumni Service to Community Award from the University of Dubuque.
Al married Myrna Louise Leasure on September 24th 1952 at [[GRANDVIEW AVENUE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH]]. They later joined [[FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST]] and were married 49 years until she preceded him in death in 2001. He later married Patricia Cullen in 2003 and she preceded him in death in 2017. (2)
 
Al started working in 1942 at age 14 sweeping the stockyards and retired from the [[DUBUQUE PACKING COMPANY]] in 1986 as a sales division manager after receiving several sales awards. (3)
