In 1910 a newspaper article gave a possible reason why the city allowed the airplane industry to slip its grasp. The article suggested that while automobiles were a "craze" elsewhere, it was only recently that they were popular here. (5) It was expected that in 1910, forty cars would be sold which was twice the number as the previous year. (6) Cost of the automobiles did not help sale. An Adams-Farwell could cost thousands of dollars while Henry Ford sold his for around $800. (7)
 
In 1911 Ray and Jay Farwell, Fay's sons, actually demonstrated the potential of his invention outside of cars. In a regatta in Dubuque, the boys attached an eighty-horsepower engine of their father's design to a boat. (8)
 
The engine was extremely light and was ideal for vertical flight. Designed and built by the Adams Company of Dubuque, Iowa, in 1907, this engine powered three, man-lifting experimental helicopters. Two of these helicopters were designed by Emile Berliner and flown in 1909 and 1910. The third was designed by J. Newton Williams and flown in 1909.
 
Adams-Farwell engines powered fixed-wing aircraft in the United States after 1910. It has been claimed that the Gnôme design of the French was patterned from the Adams-Farwell. Unlike the later Gnôme engines, the Adams-Farwell rotaries had exhaust and inlet valves mounted in the cylinder heads.


By the early 1930s the rotary aircraft engine was becoming obsolete, mainly because of a limit to its possible output torque which was a consequence of the way the engine worked.  
In 1910 a newspaper article gave a possible reason why the city allowed the automobile industry to slip its grasp. The article suggested that while automobiles were a "craze" elsewhere, it was only recently that they were popular here. (8) It was expected that in 1910, forty cars would be sold which was twice the number as the previous year. (9) Cost of the automobiles did not help sale. An Adams-Farwell could cost thousands of dollars while Henry Ford sold his for around $800. (10)
