GENERAL INSULATING AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY. Located in the former MILWAUKEE RAILROAD SHOPS, General Insulating and Manufacturing Company opened for business on June 17, 1937. On the first day, twenty-five employees went to work, but company officials hoped to have fifty by the first of the next week.
The first production was loose rock wool. Limestone was melted and then blasted with steam to shreds which were then treated in a patented process. The steam blast blew the shreds into patented chambers where they were formed into fibers. The fibers were then formed into an insulating form which was moisture resistant, chemically stable, and fire resistant.
