He graduated from John Marshall High School and received a NROTC scholarship to Princeton where he graduated in 1957 with a degree in history. He married Janice Meeter. Ralph and Janice were parents to 6 children, John, David, Cynthia, Paul, James, and Jennifer. The first three preceded him in passing along with Janice. After graduation in 1964, the family moved to New Jersey where Ralph began doctoral studies in historical theology at Princeton Seminary and Jan tutored math. They left Princeton in 1967 for Dubuque for a teaching position at [[WARTBURG SEMINARY]] and parish ministry at St. John's in St. Donatus and St. Paul's in LaMotte.
