In 1986 Heinemann received an award from the Iowa Park and Recreation Association for his leadership in the Association and his nearly nine thousand hours of volunteer work between 1983, when he became president, and 1986. In 1997 he received the [[FIRST CITIZEN AWARD]] from the [[TELEGRAPH HERALD]].
