PEABODY, William H. (Syracuse, NY, 1823--Dubuque, IA, July 1, 1906). Peabody established the first wholesale and jobbing trade in Toledo, Ohio, before moving to Dubuque in 1856. He reestablished himself in the mercantile business and expanded into a profitable liquor trade that he maintained for eighteen years with the W. H. PEABODY AND COMPANY.
Peabody's home at 1428 Locust was used from 1906 until 1960 as a rectory for ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH. In 1962 it was considered as a site for a city museum. In 1964 the home, an example of SECOND EMPIRE ARCHITECTURE, was torn down for parking space.
