A practicing attorney in Dubuque beginning in 1904, he was prominent in civic and professional groups and served as president of the Dubuque County Bar Association. He was also a member of the board of trustees of St. Mary's Orphanage and a member of the board of MOUNT CALVARY CEMETERY.
