In 1987 Spahn succeeded Franc Collier ALTMAN as president of the Spahn and Rose Lumber Company co-founded by his two grandfathers. Spahn served on the boards of the Northwestern Lumbermen's Association and AMERICAN TRUST AND SAVINGS BANK. He was president of the Iowa Lumbermen's Association and was treasurer of the DUBUQUE BOYS' CLUB.
