He arrived in New York on August 1st, but quickly moved to Boston where he remained five years working in the butcher business. He moved to New Albany, Indiana in 1851 and began farming. Continuing to look for better opportunities, he moved to Kentucky where he operated a grocery in Springfield. An outbreak of CHOLERA, however, convinced him to move north.
Bennett operated a grocery store in Chicago for two years before moving to Dubuque. In 1881 he had the thirty-three room BENNETT HOUSE constructed.
