SIMONES, Joseph. (Bonaduz, Graubuenden, Switzerland, Oct. 3, 1846--Dubuque, IA, Nov. 17, 1893). From 1872 to 1878, Simones was the proprietor of the Jefferson House. With his family, he returned to Switzerland for three and one-half years, but came back to Dubuque in 1881.
Within months of his return, the IOWA COFFIN COMPANY was organized, and Simones became its largest stockholder. In 1884, he established a large store on the corner of Sixteenth and Clay STREETS and carried a full line of clothing, boots and shoes.
At the time of his death, he was the Secretary and General Manager of the Iowa Coffin Company. He was also Vice-President and a director of the Citizen's State Bank, and a director of the Key City Fire Insurance Company, the Dubuque Pressed Brick Company, and the Elgin Silver Plate Company of Elgin, Illinois.
