Mike excelling in football, basketball, and baseball. He earned all-state honors in football, and all-conference honors in basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the Dubuque Senior High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. He was also inducted into the Slow-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in 2022.

Mike spent over 25 years refereeing and umpiring high-school athletic games.
