After working as a feature-photo editor in Fort Dodge, Woodward moved back to Dubuque to work as a reporter for radio station KDTH. He then held administrative positions with the station including assistant and then general manger. He became vice-president of the [[TELEGRAPH HERALD]] in 1965. In 1975 Woodward became Chairman of the Board and President. When these two offices were separated, he continued as Chairman of the Board until his death.
