A 1981 graduate of [[DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL]], Wagner in 2013 was named Special Olympics North America&amp;#039;s Coach of the Year. Wagner taught Special Olympians how to ski when the Winter Games began in Dubuque twenty-eight years earlier. He served as Iowa&amp;#039;s head softball coach during three Special Olympics National Games and coached softball during the 1999 World Games and alpine skiing during the 2005 World Games. &lt;br /&gt;

The Coach of the Year Award was begun in the late 1980s. It is awarded annually to an active, certified Special Olympics coach who meets certain criteria including making a significant and demonstrable impact on local Special Olympics programs and their communities. &lt;br /&gt;
