His first job was at a Dubuque television station, KWWL-TV. He worked as an intern, sports reporter, and then reporter before moving to KSPR-TV in Springfield, ~~MO,~~ as a sports anchor from 1988 - 1991. From 1992 - 1995 he worked as a sports reporter at KCAL-TV in Los Angeles. This brought him assignments for ESPN. Before becoming the co-anchor, Steines began work on ''Entertainment Tonight'' as a correspondent, substitute anchor, and anchor of ''Entertainment Tonight: Weekend''.
