After his retirement, Richard volunteered many hours at the [[DUBUQUE ARBORETUM AND BOTANICAL GARDENS]] and also served as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Tri-State Garden Club. He was inducted into the [[DUBUQUE SOFTBALL HALL OF FAME]] in 1988. &lt;br /&gt;
