	SCHMID, George Sr. (Lawrenceburg, IN, Feb. 16, 1855-- ). Schmid came with parents, Joseph and Theresa Schmid, to Dubuque at an early age and received his education in the city. At the age of fourteen, he traveled to Ohio to learn cabinet making and then returned to Dubuque from 1877 to 1882 and worked as a mechanic. Schmid came with parents, Joseph and Theresa Schmid, to Dubuque at an early age and received his education in the city. At the age of fourteen, he traveled to Ohio to learn cabinet making and then returned to Dubuque from 1877 to 1882 and worked as a mechanic.

	He became foreman of the [[DUBUQUE FURNITURE AND BURIAL CASE COMPANY]] and remained with the business until 1888. Schmid then joined his brother in Chicago in opening the American Silver Plate Company in 1889. He remained with this company until 1892 before selling his interest in the company and beginning the Schmid Manufacturing Company in Chicago. He sold his interest in this business to his brother the following year. In 1900 he tried unsuccessfully to open a plant in San Francisco and then returned to Dubuque in 1901 where he opened the [[EAGLE VALLEY WORKS]].		He became foreman of the [[DUBUQUE FURNITURE AND BURIAL CASE COMPANY]] and remained with the business until 1888. Schmid then joined his brother in Chicago in opening the American Silver Plate Company in 1889.
