The fun began when Jim arrived. For this writer, the winter months were a bit bleaker after Jim and Inga left for their winter residence in Arizona. On the other hand, no "first robin of spring" could exceed the pleasure of seeing a grinning Jim walking into Panera about the first of every April. The world will, unfortunately, be blessed with enough people like Jim who gave of his time unselfishly to the betterment of others.		No discussion of Jim would be complete without mentioning the infectious sense of humor he brought to gatherings. Watching him work on the daily crossword (while seeking a bit of help with spelling), jumbled word puzzles, or telling a story from his seemingly Rollidex mental collection brought endless joy. The son of Gene and Kay Hanten Schilling, Jim attended Nativity, [[WAHLERT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL]], and [[LORAS COLLEGE]]. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1970.

It was during law school that Jim met Inga C. Padgham. They were married on December 28, 1968. They moved back to Dubuque upon graduation and Jim settled in to practice law for over 50 years. He was Assistant City Attorney, Assistant County Attorney, and had his own private practice.

Jim contributed to the Dubuque community in many ways.
