New page

RICHARDSONIAN ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE. Heavy and massive style. One of the architects to pioneer the style was H. H. Richardson (1838-1886). Popular in the United States between 1870 and 1900, the Romanesque style used rounded arches; short, heavy set chimneys; and tall towers topped with pyramid-shaped roofs. It was often used in public buildings including churches and courthouses.

Examples in Dubuque once included CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, demolished when its weathered stone weakened the building. Other examples include SAINT LUKE'S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, the DUBUQUE STAR BREWING COMPANY, and the DUBUQUE BREWING AND MALTING COMPANY. The Frank D. STOUT home at 1105 Locust, this city's only Richardsonian Romanesque home, was built for the lumber baron in 1890 at an estimated cost of over $75,000. It was later used as the official residence of the ARCHBISHOPS.
