Serving in the state guard command, the 6th Iowa Cavalry he was dispatched to Camp Cook in the Dakota Territory, in March 1863. His command served as security against Confederate and Indian attacks for settlers in the Dakota Territory until the end of the war. Lieutenant-Colonel Pollock was appointed colonel of the regiment and continued in command until 1865 when the regiment was mustered out of the service. For meritorious services, Pollock was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865.
