New page

PECK, Donna Sue. (Danville, IL, Sept. 23, 1939--Dubuque, IA, Dec. 28, 2016). The only child of Vaughn and Thelma (Emhuff) Denton, Donna Sue came to Dubuque as a freshman at UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE. She met and married Bill in 1960 and had two sons.

Throughout her career as a teacher, Donna Sue had an incredibly positive impact on many students around Dubuque. She taught in the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT for 38 years and was at almost every school in town, including 29 years as the director of the Senior High School Orchestra.

In addition to teaching music, she was a charter member of the DUBUQUE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and served as its first concertmaster and assistant concertmaster for 29 years. She conducted and performed in countless venues around Dubuque and the tri-state area throughout her career. She was so honored to receive the YWCA WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD in 1980 and the University of Dubuque Alumni Award for Community Service in 2013.

After retiring, Donna Sue’s artistic spirit turned to quilting. She passionately snipped, sewed and experimented, producing so many true pieces of art that friends and family will cherish for years to come. In retirement, she and Bill traveled the country and the world; spent as much time as possible with their sons and grandchildren; enjoyed spending time with close friends, including in five bridge clubs, PEO, CLIO Club and her fiber arts organization; and devoted time to their extensive garden, particularly the hostas.
