New page

PAPAL VISIT. Although Pope John Paul II did not visit Dubuque on his visit to Iowa on October 4, 1979, parishioners in the [[ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE]] along with thousands of interested Iowans eagerly looked forward to the visit.

A budget of $1.2 million was established to accommodate the estimated 200,000 to 250,000 people who would attend the pope's mass at Living History Farms near Des Moines. Special envelopes suggesting donations from $5.00 to $500.00 were distributed at masses. A variety of official commemorative gifts were available for different amounts of donations. These included a portrait etching of the pope by Des Moines artist Bill Fultz ($3,000 and over), a leather-bound edition of a 96-page book commemorating the visit ($2,000-$2,999), down to an official medallion ($100-$499).
