A total of 552 new cases were reported in Dubuque County, the highest total--by 237 cases--in the past four weeks. Another five COVID-19 related deaths were also reported. Mary Rose Corrigan, Dubuque Public Health Specialist, commented that it was almost to be expected with the closure of health care providers and test centers on Christmas and New Year's and decreased testing. There were, however, fewer COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Dubuque hospitals for the fourth straight week--to 30. That was the lowest total since the local hospitals began providing patient counts on Wednesday to the Telegraph Herald after the State of Iowa stopped releasing county-level patient counts. Officials believed that state-reported figures lacked accuracy due to the increasing numbers of people who were checking their health using at-home tests and deciding not to report positive cases.
