Menke was a teacher in the [[DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT]] for thirty-three years. Beginning at [[LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL]] in 1959, he transferred to [[DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL]] in 1966 as a drivers&amp;#039; education teacher. He transferred to the same department at [[STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL]] in 1970.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Active in the [[DUBUQUE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION]], he also served as board member, first and second vice-president, and business manager for the Iowa Association of Safety Education.  From 1965 until late in the 1980s, he was in charge of the fireworks displays for the Senior High School football games and city-wide for the Fourth of July celebrations.&lt;br /&gt;
