	MCCRANEY, Thomas. (1791 – May 21, 1855) Thomas McCraney served in the War of 1812 in Capt. Samuel Ingersoll’s Co. 7th Regiment New York State Artillery. He was a member of the first General Assembly of the Territory of Wisconsin, which included Iowa, and was elected one of the delegates to form the state’s constitution.

			MCCRANEY, Thomas. (New York, 1791 – Clayton County, May 21, 1855) Thomas McCraney served in the War of 1812 in Capt. Samuel Ingersoll’s Co. 7th Regiment New York State Artillery. He was a member of the first General Assembly of the Territory of Wisconsin, which included Iowa, and was elected one of the delegates to form the state’s constitution.

	By 1833 Thomas, his wife, and their children were living in Jo Davis County and planned to mine across the [[MISSISSIPPI RIVER]] in what became Dubuque County. Thomas had crossed the Mississippi River in 1832 and set up two cabins at the mouth of the hollow where Eighth Street was later located. He also erected a furnace for the purpose of smelting [[LEAD]] ore. He also built a house near the furnace for his employees. This place began to be called “McCraney’s Hollow.” On January 10, 1833, Susan Ann McCraney, the first white child in Dubuque, and perhaps in all of Iowa, was born. Thomas married his second wife, Mary A. Harwood Hill in 1844. They moved to Garnavillo, Clayton County, where he lived until his death in 1855. Thomas’ family had him interred in the Pioneer Cemetery in Dubuque, where his two sons, Read and Frank, where buried. Later Thomas and his two sons were moved to [[LINWOOD CEMETERY]].
