	MCCARTY, Frank K. (Dubuque, IA--Los Angeles, CA, Apr. 4, 1942). The son of George ~~McCarthy~~ who operated the [[MERCHANTS' HOTEL]] for many years, McCarthy joined the American Legion after returning to the United States from [[WORLD WAR I]] in 1919. He rose to the position of commander of the Eleventh Illinois District. When he was transferred to Chicago as an employee of the [[ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD]] he was one of the founders of the Illinois Central Legion Post and was elected its first commander. While there he rose to the position of adjutant. He served in the same position for two years ~~when transferred~~ to Oelwein, Iowa in 1930.		He left the Illinois Central and came to Dubuque to work for the [[INTERSTATE POWER COMPANY]]. He was active in the Dubuque Post before being transferred to O'Neill, Nebraska. 	Returning to Dubuque, McCarthy served as the post commander before being elected county commander. In 1935 he was elected the district vice commander and was appointed detachment (state) ~~commanders~~ of the Sons of the American Legion.
