Massey with [[LANGWORTHY, James\|James LANGWORTHY]] carried dispatches between General Dodge and General Scott ending the [[BLACK HAWK WAR]]. Massey moved to Dubuque in 1833 with his family. With a twenty-five-dollar donation, he became the largest contributor toward construction of the first church in Dubuque and the first Methodist church in Iowa. Massey served as a church trustee.
