John William Manson was the son of Walter and Elizabeth Manson. The Mansons immigrated to America about 1830. Walter was one of the pioneer owners and operators of the [[ROCKDALE MILL]], but sold his interest and invested his money in Dubuque real estate.

	John W. Manson received his early education in the public schools of Dubuque, later enrolled in a course in [[BAYLESS BUSINESS COLLEGE]], which he finished when nineteen years old. He then entered the dry goods establishment of Keas and Sullivan, and when, after the death of the former, the business was renamed [[SULLIVAN AND STAMPFER]], he remained with the firm for thirteen years.		John W. Manson received his early education in the public schools of Dubuque. He later enrolled in a course in [[BAYLESS BUSINESS COLLEGE]], which he finished when nineteen years old. He then entered the dry goods establishment of Keas and Sullivan, and when, after the death of the former, the business was renamed [[SULLIVAN AND STAMPFER]], he remained with the firm for thirteen years.

	In 1897, in partnership with Ernest Seitz, he opened a dry goods and notion store on Main and Eighth Street. This partnership was dissolved in 1900 and he returned to Sullivan & Stampfer. He next became manager of the Home Milling Company at Rockdale, but upon the dissolution of this concern in 1905 he bought an interest in the [[IOWA HOUSE FURNISHING COMPANY]], and became its secretary and a director. He served as president of the company after its incorporation. Mr. Manson ~~has~~ served as deputy assessor for Dubuque County.		In 1897, in partnership with Ernest Seitz, he opened a dry goods and notion store on Main and Eighth Street. This partnership was dissolved in 1900 and he returned to Sullivan & Stampfer.
