Returning from World War II, Kruse worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Dubuque office, for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1984, after serving as director of administration during the last 17 years of his postal career. &lt;br /&gt;

He was appointed to the U.S. Civil Service Commission, Washington, D.C., in August 1961, with his designated area the 9th U.S. Civil Service Region from St. Louis. He served on the board of the U.S. Civil Service Examiners for 20 years. He also served on the advisory board of the [[CENTER FOR DUBUQUE HISTORY]] at [[LORAS COLLEGE]], the Dubuque Postal Service Advisory Council and was a charter member of the Friends of Wahlert Memorial Library at Loras College.
