When refrigeration became available,  he became owner of a dairy and made ice cream. Eventually this venture turned into Kirchhoff Distributing Company, owned by his son Robert Kirchhoff and later by his grandson, Ronald Kirchhoff. There were offices in Maquoketa, Clinton and Dubuque. Over the years, they sold a variety of beers, mostly Budweiser products.
