In 1929 Kammer came to Dubuque to be the trainer of the Dubuque Tigers professional baseball team. It was during a game when Kammer was rushing into the infield to help an injured player that his medicine bag popped open spilling supplies on the field. His nickname of "Doc" began. A member of the Quarter Century Club, Kammer was a charter member of the Loras Athletic Hall of Fame.
