New page

JACKSON, Peggy (Dubuque IA-- ). In 2019 Jackson organized her 14th annual "A Walk Through Black History," an event held every February during Black History Month at [[FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH]]. For 2019, Jackson chose performances promoting diversity and lesser-known stories with major impacts on black history.

When the annual event began, there was a feeling that African-Amerian children were unaware of accomplishments made by their ancestors. She worked with [[DEAN, Cammie|Cammie DEAN]] and her pastor to begin the program and has inspired others to suggest more material. Stories shared included the meeting of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and the Freedom Riders. Other performances have been the musical "Crowns," Delany Sisters, Ellen Craft and Ellen Shephard.
