He work with chambers of commerce began in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He lobbied for the chamber and served as a loaned executive for the National Alliance of Businesses in South Dakota. Told that he was too young to head the Sioux Falls chamber, he left in 1984 for the River City Chamber of Commerce in Clinton, Iowa. He took the Dubuque chamber office in 1988.
