A running guard for the University of Iowa football team, Hantelmann won letters in the 1930 and 1931 seasons. Enlisting in the military during [[WORLD WAR II]], he was involved in fighting near Buna, New Guinea in December, 1942.		HANTELMANN, Harold E. 	Nicknamed "Blackie" by his men for his black beard, Hantelmann was the commander of a heavy weapons company. Leading an assault on a fortified Japanese position, he threw hand grenades and fired rifle grenades into a machine gun emplacement. Although wounded in the head by a sniper, he led his soldiers in the successful assault of the enemy position. For his bravery, Hantelmann was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross ~~and~~ two Bronze Stars for gallantry.
