	GUILFORD, W. H. (Dubuque, IA, (Oct. 16, 1839--Dubuque, IA, Jan. 12, 1927) In the period of about 1840 until 1915, Guilford was a nurseryman and fruit grower in Dubuque County. Between 1884 to about 1906 he was active in the promotion of horticulture in Dubuque County. He helped organize and served as the first president of the ~~[[DUBUQUE COUNTY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY]] and in~~ 1885 and for twenty-five years maintained a local experimental testing station for horticultural ~~plans~~ and varieties. He often presented papers at the annual meetings of both the Northeastern Iowa Horticultural Society and the county society on a wide range of topics especially fruit growing. he was a close observer of how different varieties thrived when grown in his area.
