	GEHRIG, Henry. (Dubuque, IA, Apr. 3, 1864--Nov. 10, 1941). Born in the [[JEFFERSON HOUSE]] which his parents, [[GEHRIG, Joseph\|Joseph GEHRIG]] and Ursula Kiene Gehrig, operated, Henry worked as he grew up with his father in the operation of the hotel. Upon the death of his father, he took over its management. The Jefferson House was one of the many hotels which were operated in the vicinity of the [[DUBUQUE COUNTY COURTHOUSE]] in the old "horse and buggy days" and with the development of the automobile passed out of existence. Fraternally he was affiliated with the Dubuque lodge of Elks for twenty-eight years and for many years served as a member of the sick committee of that lodge. He was also a member of the [[ANCIENT ORDER OF UNITED WORKMEN (A.O.U.W.)]]. At the time of his death, and for many years previously, he was a director of the [[DUBUQUE FIRE AND MARINE INSURANCE COMPANY]].		Gehrig was prominent in Dubuque County political circles as an active member of the Democratic Party. Fraternally he was affiliated with the Dubuque lodge of Elks for twenty-eight years and for many years served as a member of the sick committee of that lodge.
