Freymann taught in the Dubuque public schools from 1926 to 1944 as a special education classroom teacher and school psychologist ~~before leaving~~ the city in 1944 to attend the University of Iowa. According to newspaper accounts at the time, Freymann described her work as educating those around the patient as well as convincing the victim of the disease that they could and would have to make changes in their lives.
