	FESSLER, Robert. (Dubuque, IA, Mar. 4, 1936--Asbury, IA, Jan. 13, 1999). In 1948 as an fifth grade student, Fessler won the city marbles tournament arranged by the city recreation commission and sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This qualified him to compete in the state tournament in Boone on May 15, 1948. Because he arrived fifteen minutes late due to bad weather, he was disqualified from play. Returning to Dubuque, he found on May 17th that the local post of the VFW had contacted government and army officials over the weekend. They had arranged for Robert to compete in the national competition at Salt Lake City in June as the representative of the army. He would also be flown to the competition by the U. S. Army air force.
