New page

DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS. New to the community in 2003 was Dubuque Dollars for Scholars, an organization to help local students reduce the cost of a college education. Affiliated with the largest nonprofit scholarship organization in the United States, Scholarship America, the local group hoped to award scholarship money beginning in the spring of 2004. It also planned to raise $1 million over the next five to ten years for scholarships. It was hoped that each student who applied would receive money.

Along with students attending four-year schools, scholarships would be made to students attending technical or community colleges and eventually to adult learners who wanted to return college.

Iowa had 101 Dollars for Scholars chapters in 2003 and there were more than 1,150 Dollars for Scholars involving an estimated 40,000 volunteers.
