Educated in the Dubuque grammar and high schools and [[BAYLESS BUSINESS COLLEGE]], William went to work for [[FERGUSON BROTHERS AND VOGEL]] at the age of eighteen. Later when the business was involved in the wholesale business, he became the company secretary. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
William remained with the company until 1898 as its secretary before going into business for himself. When business expanded, he took in an associate partner, Isiah Cleminson, in the company of [[W. D. DECKERT COMPANY]].&lt;br /&gt;
