A son of [[CHEWNING, Charles\|Charles CHEWNING]], Martin was a drummer in the Vioni Dance Orchestra of Dubuque. On August 25, 1925 he enlisted into the U.S. Army. From then until 1943 he was assigned to Army Band units including four years in the Panama Canal Zone and eight years at Fort Hamilton, New York. While conducting a station Complement Band that he had organized, Marty met with an unfortunate accident that curtailed his music career. He continued with his Army career and retired after 30 years. He died on December 16, 1976 in Brooklyn, NY. His wife, Betty Chewning died in New York in 1980, they had no children.
