In 1972 Central Extension School opened at 1500 Locust within the administration building of the [[DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT]]. The school offered a partial high school curricula for students who had left the city's public high schools or had difficulties adjusting to the traditional classroom.

			On April 28, 1980 Central Extension School gained school board approval to expand its staff and provide a four-year degree program. The school was also renamed Central Alternative High School. In 1983 Central Alternative was moved to 39 Bluff Street, the former site of [[FRANKLIN SCHOOL]].

	During the 1992-1993 school year, Central became an Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound School. This placed the school within the design of the New American Schools Development philosophy that stated a belief that all students can learn. Based on the research of thirty Central students, a book was written based on their interviews with local veterans, a war seminar that was attended by more than 1,400 people, and an air show featuring war planes. Book sales combined with other activities and donations from local businesses raised an estimated $6,000 for the war memorial. The schools contribution ranked among the top ten nationwide among schools raised for the memorial. According to memorial authorities, more than 800 schools nationwide raised about $500,000. (1)
