	In 1956, following one year at Loras, Allan enrolled at the University of Iowa and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. He then was accepted to the University of Iowa Law School where he graduated with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1960. In 1965, he returned to Dubuque and co-founded the Fuerste Carew Law Firm with his friend and partner, William ~~C. Fuerste~~. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1955 and returned to [[LORAS COLLEGE]] for one year where he continued his studies and basketball career. He was selected as the team's most valuable player and in 2015 still held the Loras College record for most rebounds in a single game.
