	Employed as a pressman for the [[TELEGRAPH HERALD]] and then the ''Dubuque Times-Journal'', Brown became the union secretary and treasurer when the Dubuque Printing Pressmen's and Assistants' Union was organized in 1914. He served in that position until his death. After twenty-seven years, Brown retired as a pressman and served briefly as a U.S. deputy marshal for northeastern Iowa.
