Chartered by Birthright, International on September 20, 1972, Birthright was oganized by Mary Brown, Marian Schuelle, and Kenny Herbst. Volunteers working out of their homes provided pregnant women with an alternative to abortion. Receiving no federal money or grants, the organization existed on donations from individuals and businesses. (1) In 2022 as the organization was celebrating its 50th year in Dubuque, many supplies were collected through church-sponsored baby drives. (2)

	Volunteers in 1997 provided pregnancy testing in the downtown office, discussed the results with clients, and helped with referrals to community agencies. Those in need could receive maternity or baby clothes, blankets, diapers, and other baby-care items~~. Annually between 500-600 women came to the center~~.
