The Becker family of Dubuque began in the building stone business around the beginning of the 20th century. In 1976 Fred and his father Harold founded Becker and Becker.

			The company's building focus was dimensional building stone for new structures including hospitals, government agencies, and universities. In the past stone was cut on site, but by 1998 stone was cut based on calculations from architectural drawings. Pieces were numbered and sent to the job site.

			Learning to become a stone fabricator including setting up and operating the machinery took up to three years. Creating cornice stones with curves and indentations often required one of the employees to make the necessary tool. Restoration or expansion projects were accomplished in 1998 with stone cutters making a rubbing from the building or using pieces of stone to match the old and new. In 1998 only one or two dozen companies did this kind of work. Becker and Becker worked primarily throughout the Midwest and West. One of the company's proudest accomplishments was creating the facade for the old J. C. Penney building to match [[AMERICAN TRUST AND SAVINGS BANK]]. (1)
