BENZ, Frank. (Dunn Center, ND- ). In 1970 Benz, an associate professor of Old Testament at WARTBURG THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY received word that his doctoral dissertation entitled "Personal Names in Phoenician and Punic Inscriptions" was accepted for publication by the Pontifical Biblical Institute of Rome. The paper was a catalogue and grammatical study of personal names occurring in all published Phoenician and Punic inscriptions from North Africa, the western Mediterranean, and the Near East. The dissertation has been considered an important source for scholars interested in Semitic names.

Benz was also a participant in archaeological excavations at Tel Gezer in Israel.
